Now one of our favorite things about New Mexico is that you don't have to travel far to find an incredible place to get married.
Within an hour (or two) of Albuquerque, you can exchange vows beneath towering cottonwoods, on the edge of dramatic sandstone cliffs, tucked away in the mountains, or surrounded by blooming roses. Whether you're dreaming of a quiet ceremony with just the two of you or an intimate celebration with your closest family and friends, New Mexico has no shortage of beautiful places to begin your marriage.
After photographing weddings and exploring countless locations over the years, these are some of our favorite places to elope in and around Albuquerque.
Elena Gallegos Open Space
The two shelter areas are incredibly versatile. You have sweeping views of the Sandia Mountains, plenty of room for guests, beautiful desert landscapes, and enough privacy to make the ceremony feel intimate without hiking miles into the wilderness.
Whether you're inviting twenty guests or simply saying your vows together, the shelters create a natural gathering space while still feeling connected to the landscape that makes New Mexico so special.

A local tip: Try to avoid late spring when gnat season arrives in the foothills. We promise, it can turn an otherwise perfect evening into a battle against tiny flying visitors. Planning around it makes all the difference.
Ojito Wilderness ~ Dragons Back Ridge Trailhead
If dramatic desert landscapes are your thing, this place is hard to beat.
Dragon's Back Trailhead overlooks an enormous red valley that feels almost otherworldly. The sandstone formations, endless views, and quiet surroundings create an incredible backdrop for couples who want something adventurous without needing a full-day backpacking trip.
Sunrise and sunset are especially magical here, when the desert glows with warm reds and golds.
It's one of those places that instantly reminds you just how wild and beautiful New Mexico really is.
Jemez Mountains
If you're willing to drive a little farther from Albuquerque, the Jemez Mountains open up an entirely different side of New Mexico.

This might be our most underrated recommendation.
Some of Albuquerque's public parks are absolutely beautiful, especially during spring and early fall. Mature cottonwoods, wide-open grassy spaces, mountain views, and quiet corners make them wonderful options for couples wanting a relaxed, affordable celebration.

Plan a morning ceremony while the light is soft and the park is peaceful, then invite your favorite people to stick around for a picnic or potluck lunch afterward.

If we had to choose one location that truly feels like a hidden gem, it would be San Lorenzo Canyon.

Not every elopement needs sweeping mountain views.
Sometimes all you want is a peaceful garden surrounded by flowers.
The Botanic Garden is perfect for couples planning a small, intimate ceremony. The rose garden offers a romantic setting to exchange vows, and afterward you can wander through the greenhouse for portraits that feel completely different from anything else around Albuquerque.
From lush tropical greenery to colorful blooms, it feels like visiting several locations without ever leaving the gardens.
as of 2026 the bio park is no longer holding private events, however with a purchased photo permit (if wanting professional photos taken) guests are welcome to utilize the bio park for small celebrations during business hours.
Downtown Courthouse
Not every wedding needs a mountain backdrop.
Some of our favorite celebrations begin with a simple "I do" at the courthouse.
There's something refreshingly uncomplicated about meeting downtown, exchanging your vows, and officially becoming married before heading out to celebrate however you want. No strict timeline, no pressure, just the two of you soaking in the fact that you finally tied the knot.
One of the best parts? The adventure starts after the ceremony.
Downtown Albuquerque offers so many incredible places for portraits.
Want to make the day even more memorable? Grab coffee together, share lunch at your favorite restaurant, pop champagne at a nearby park, or finish the evening with dinner on a rooftop while the sun sets over the Sandias.

Taos Gorge
If you're dreaming of an adventurous elopement that feels wild, intimate, and completely unforgettable, the Rio Grande Gorge is hard to top.
A few years ago, we had the honor of photographing an elopement here that we'll never forget.
It was just the two of them, their officiant, and the four of us standing on the edge of the gorge as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon. No chairs. No timeline packed with events. No audience.
Just two people making a promise to one another in one of the most breathtaking places New Mexico has to offer.
As they exchanged vows overlooking the canyon, the light turned everything shades of gold, orange, and deep purple. The cliffs seemed to glow, and for a little while, it felt like the rest of the world had disappeared.
One of our favorite memories from that evening came after the ceremony.
Because there were no guests, they asked us to sign their marriage license as their witnesses.
It's a role we don't take lightly.
